  • 1 loaf challah bread, cubed about 1 pound
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 /4 granulated sugar cup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 /4 powdered sugar cup, for dusting
  • to taste Maple syrup

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, heavy cream, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon.
  • Add the cubed challah bread to the custard mixture, stirring gently to coat evenly. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes to allow the bread to absorb the custard.
  • Pour the bread mixture into the prepared baking dish. Drizzle with melted butter.
  • Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown and set. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out with only a few moist crumbs.
  • Let cool for 10-15 minutes before dusting with powdered sugar and serving with maple syrup.

Notes

For an even richer flavor, use brioche bread instead of challah. You can also add other spices like nutmeg or allspice. Make this ahead of time! Assemble the casserole the night before and bake it in the morning. This allows the bread to fully absorb the custard mixture, resulting in a more tender and flavorful casserole.
