Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
  • Make the crust: Whisk together flour and salt. Cut in cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add ice water, mixing until dough just comes together. Do not overmix.
  • Press 2/3 of the dough into the bottom of the prepared pan.
  • Make the filling: In a large bowl, combine sugars, cinnamon, allspice, cornstarch, and lemon juice. Add apples and toss to coat evenly.
  • Spread apple filling over the crust.
  • Roll out the remaining dough and cut into strips. Arrange strips over the filling in a lattice pattern or crumble the dough over the top.
  • Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Let cool completely before cutting into bars.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use a combination of sweet and tart apples. You can also add a sprinkle of coarse sugar before baking for extra sweetness and crunch.
